Farm to Table Fridays continue this week with special fare showcasing the best meats and produce our area’s local farms have to offer!

Miles and Justine Cowan are a far cry from their native west coast. Work initially brought the husband and wife team from Southern California to Northern Virginia, and after a short stint in Seattle, they happily moved back to Loudoun County — making Purcellville their permanent home.
The IT sales exec and classically trained chef had always dreamed of farm life…and took the leap with the purchase of the former Chicama Run Farm, a 30-acre working farm with a loyal customer base.
Calling their new home “sweet, peaceful, beautiful,” Justine says, “It’s a lot of work, but we’re all happy about it.” Although admittedly a major lifestyle adjustment, she adds, “It’s been massive learning curves, but really fun.”
The couple, along with their 3 boys, share their “grange” with dairy cows, heritage breed hogs, sheep, goats, ducks and chickens. They also raise Black Angus steer, which are grass-fed, pasture raised, and aged by a certified USDA humane butcher.
“We actually dry age the meat for 21 days, so we’re really well known for our beef,” says Miles.
The Cowan’s have also hired a dairy cow expert and an agriculturist to help build up the farm to offer organic produce. They have creative culinary plans for their catering trailer, with expansion plans to include cooking classes down the road.
“In the future we’d actually like to build a nice, big, brand new market with a big commercial kitchen and stuff like that, so I can do more,” adds Justine.
Grange & Grub is currently open on weekends and patrons can also make appointments to “build a box” as part of their meat CSA.
